Resources:
We will engage in two data collection activities, process the data, and import into CODAP for some initial exploratory data analysis.
Resources:
A national overview of data science education efforts including curriculum and standards from across the country.
Resources:
Data Advocacy Deck (several example slides for making the “pitch” to school leaders)
Bring meaningful, real-world data into the classroom using public health datasets on topics like social media trends and environmental health. Participants will explore hands-on, student-centered lessons that build student agency, critical thinking, and data analysis skills while deepening understanding of math, science, and social studies concepts.
Resources:
This session with introduce the Making Sense of Data Visualization framework and support teachers in their ability to use CODAP in their classrooms.
Resources:
This session will provide an introduction to making categorical predictions, which is a topic often overlooked in traditional statistics coursework. We’ll look at how to decide if bank notes are counterfeit, if a cell patient is likely to have chronic kidney disease, or if a midge is a carrier of deadly virus.
Resources:
Labeled Midge Data for k-Nearest Neighbors
Unlabeled Midge Data for k-means Clustering
Learn how to use Google’s Teaching Machine interface to streamline your students abilities to make categorical predictions without having to neccesarily understanding a full technology stack to code it themselves.
Resources:
In this session, we will discuss the broader context of incorporating AI into education, and we will work with some resources for helping students begin to think about using AI responsibly.
Resources:
Teachers will Define Trustworthy & Responsible AI, Explore Current State of AI in Learning Spaces at the Graduate & Professional Level, Explore Evaluation Frameworks for AI Deployment in the Health Sector, and Count the Cost of AI to our society and values.
Resources:
Today at lunch we'll hear from 3 groups of NCSSM students who are currently working on a summer project that uses data science to solve a real-world problem for organizations in our NCSSM-Morganton community.
We will explore data visualizations that support developing data literacy. We will also engage in a data investigation focused on association using CODAP. You will have the opportunity to reflect on different phases of a data investigation process.
Resources:
A Hands-On Session where teachers will assume the role of students completing an algorithmic bias module using the Look-Think-Do Framework & Platform. Feedback & Discussion to follow on the Art of what is possible with the Look-Think-Do framework & platform
Resources:
Slides (to be shared soon)
We will use block-based coding to program micro:bits to collect environmental data, and we will use that data for machine learning. We will also take a brief look at Amazon's future engineer offerings in Voice AI.
Resources:
Come grab a drink and socialize this evening at Fonta Flora brewery, right across the street from The Fairfield Inn and Suites in downtown Morganton. We have the side room reserved for our event. Fonta Flora is known for their beer, but also serve wine, and have non-alcoholic drink options available as well. Hope to see you there!
